My Thoughts On Mother’s Day

So it’s Mother’s Day. It’s the one time of year that we actually look up from our phones and acknowledge that our moms did a lot for us and say thank you. And you know what? I don’t like it.

Not because I don’t think that we should be grateful and cherish our mothers. Quite the opposite. I think we should do that 365 days a year, as opposed to just 1. I think that having 1 day of the year be designated as Mother’s Day sends the message that that’s the only time we need to appreciate our mothers. Which is just not true.

Our moms do so much for us. They carry us, give birth to us, feed us, clothe us, and mold us into our best possible selves. And that’s assuming they don’t also have full-time jobs. And we don’t make it easy for them. My mother will be the first to tell you that we fought a lot when I was a kid. I was stubborn and opinionated and just all around belligerent. And if I’m being honest, I still am all those things. And yet she still loves me. She still wants to help me. She still will come running if I’m in need. That level of compassion, patience, and loyalty is something that a single day of saying thank you cannot possibly match.

So from this day forward, stop thinking of May 12th as Mother’s Day and start thinking of every day as Mother’s Day. Tell your mom you love her. Tell her that you appreciate her. And for goodness sake, don’t make her life any more stressful than it needs to be.

Love you, mom.
